New Hanover County is proud to join our LGBTQ+ community as we embrace and commemorate PRIDE Month. Fifty three years ago, police raided a gay club at the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village. This raid sparked rioting among bar patrons and neighborhood residents with police. The riot involved hundreds of people and led to six days of protests and violent clashes with law enforcement outside the bar.
Today, we solemnly remember that violent day and the brave fight for liberation and equity as we join the rest of our Nation in celebrating the liberation of LGBTQ+ individuals across this community by recognizing PRIDE Month.
